A Starstruck Odyssey is a sci-fi Dungeons and Dragons campaign from Dimension 20. Set in the same universe as the Starstruck comics by Elaine Lee and Michael Kaluta, the campaign follows a group of proldiers who become tangled in intergalatic conflict after joining with Princeps Zortch, a royal runaway, to protect the supercomputer Gnosis from falling into the wrong hands. Pursued by both old and new enemies, the crew of The Wurst (a hot dog shaped spaceship) attempt to save the galaxy... and make as much money as they possibly can.
Consisting of 18 episodes and almost 40 hours of gameplay, A Starstruck Odyssey aired on Dropout from January to May in 2022. It's the 13th season of Dimension 20, and the 6th Intrepid Heroes season. The intro features art by Amy Reeder, the season's artist, to the song 'Get Me Something' by The New Fools.

A Starstruck Odyssey was the first Dimension 20 season I watched (and the first D&D campaign!). I think it combines the perfect plot with the perfect characters in the perfect world. When certain characters' storylines began intertwining, it was incredible! They managed to merge all the different, complicated stories into one cohesive plot, which led to a really satisfying ending.

And then there's all the chaotic side stories that just add to the charm of the world, things like Sidney's hunt for Loose Duke on the ship and Plug's entire existence. It really is the perfect balance of intended plot and accidental plot that just make it so great. No matter how crazy everything gets, it all makes sense in the world of Starstruck.

The characters are super realistic despite being in a futuristic, intergalatic setting. They are completely different people with completely different life trajectories, yet their reasons for being on The Wurst in the first place make sense—they all have goals it aligns with in some way. Their interactions with one another and the world feel right and consistent with their characters.

Their backstories aren't just meticulous for the sake of the plot. They actually impact everything about the characters. I think this is especially the case with Sidney and Barry, who both seem to carry their past like the guns and grenades they hold close. Not only does it mean something to them, but it's something they actively throw out into the world, resulting in it triggering many events.

    WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Now, it's time for the part of the rant that has spoilers, because I NEED to talk about how well they linked Skip and Barry's plot lines. I'm not even going to lie, before the reveal I was a little disappointed about how Skip's past and the Mentaphagian Dynasty seemed entirely detached from any other storyline. But then they revealed that Barry Nyne was actually King Prilbus, and it was INCREDIBLE. Suddenly, everything made sense. I'm so glad they didn't just throw in the Mentaphagian Dynasty to be solely a backstory and another thing to run from.

Then, they furthered the depth of its relevance by linking it to Rubian V and Lucienne and everything. It's perfect! I love when media creates these characters who have nothing truly linking them except for being in the same situation throughout the media, and then it pulls some plot twist where they're linked beyond what we see of them. Barry Syx and Skip were already linked before they both ended up on The Wurst. It creates this world where there can be multiple catalyst events that cause these characters to meet and interact with one another, adding depth to them and the universe. If it hadn't been on The Wurst, then it would've been on Rubian V, or at Uncle Bob's Fantanimalland. It's just the perfect way to tie together the plot, and make it seem less like a story and more like a world, which is why I love A Starstruck Odyssey so much. It feels like a world.
